- Enjoy your insanely tasty vegan chorizo tostadas.
Are tostada shells plant-based?
Yes, vegans can eat tostadas, thankfully!
However, always check the ingredient list to be sure. For this recipe, I used the brand “Charras”, which I was able to find at my local Safeway grocery store. I found these in the International Foods aisle.
The ingredients listed for the Charras tortilla tostadas are as follows:
White cornflour
Vegetable oil
Dehydrated jalapeno pepper
Sea salt
Citric Acid
Spices & FD&C Yellow No 5
TBHQ as antioxidant
Are Tostadas healthier than tortilla chips?
Interestingly enough, tortilla chips and tostadas are cut from the same cloth! To be more specific, it seems tortilla chips are the smaller versions of tostadas cut into triangles. So there really is no difference when it comes to the nutritional value.
Which tostadas or tortillas are the healthiest?
I would highly recommend corn tostadas or tortillas if you are trying to pick a more nutritious option. For instance, looking at the nutritional information on “Charras” tostadas that I recently bought this is the nutrition information for 3 pieces
Calories - 200
Fat - 9 g (saturated - 4 g)
Sodium - 14%
Carbohydrates - 9%
Fibres -2g
Protein - 3g
Iron - 12% (!!!)
Are refried beans vegan though?
They can be but you have to double-check the can! Some cans list lard as an ingredient and are therefore not vegan. If you’ve read through the ingredient list and did not see “lard” listed as an ingredient, it is vegan safe!
Do Old El Paso Refried Beans have Lard?
Perhaps they used to, but I recently bought (2021) some refried beans from Old El Paso and it was completely vegan! Here is the link to see the ingredients list for the refried beans I bought (they were so tasty!).
