Honest Review of Vancouver Based Food Truck ‘Veg Out’ | Plant-Based Burgers, Fries, and Shakes!
First off, I’ll acknowledge that as a plant-based person, I feel the implicit need to like every new vegan business that pops up… because it’s vegan. Do I really want to down-talk about any food business that’s vegan if it is helping the cruelty-free and climate action movement?!
So acknowledging that pressure, I’ve still decided to be totally blunt and honest about how much I like a plant-based/vegan item.
I wouldn’t want to praise a bunch of food items, have omnivores test them out, hate them, and write off being plant-based! Or I wouldn’t want to have people think we’re all a bunch of tasteless wackos or compulsive liars. I don’t think that would help things either.
So that all said, let’s begin!
Vancouver’s Own Veg Out Food Truck Burgers & Shakes Honest Review
Veg Out Classic Burger (Plant-Based)
This classic burger from Veg Out includes:
A perfectly seasoned 4oz Beyond patty
Signature VegOut sauce
Pickles
Onions
Tomato
Crisp lettuce
Original creamy Chao cheese slice
Fresh brioche bun (with choice of GF bun)
When thinking back to a classic, fresh, meaty burger, that is bursting with flavor, meaty juices, and saucy goodness with every bite, Veg Out has brought that to our lives with this Veg Out Classic Burger.
This burger was saucy and dripping, but not to the point you are like Oh M. G. where are the napkins? You will need napkins! It just won’t be an instant life or death sauce situation.
The bun to burger ratio was on point. Everything about this burger hits the ‘classic’ cheeseburger taste right on the nose.
Any plant-curious person will enjoy this burger.
Original Chick’n Burger
The Veg Out Chick’n burger includes:
Original chick'n tossed in their signature house-made coating, fried to a perfect crunch
Sweet mustard sauce
Fresh shredded lettuce
Sliced dill pickle.
Fresh brioche bun (with choice of GF bun)
OK, wow.
This chick'n burger is precisely what you would expect of an amazing mock-chicken burger.
What KFC has failed to do with its plant-based chicken burger, Veg Out makes look easy.
Say it with me, moisture. Moiiissttuuureeee!
They manage to create a burger that has perfect fake chicken texture for the following reasons:
The inside texture/ stringiness seems to be as close as one can get to creating real chicken texture and mouth feel.
The chicken patty itself has actual MOISTURE in it! Like it is JUICY! As any fake chicken burger that knows what it is doing should be!
If the juicy factor wasn’t enough for you, Veg Out kills it with the crispy outer layer as well! It had a perfect crispy crunch, mouth-watering seasoning, and the perfect amount of batter.
On top of the chick’n-patty being incredible, I found the simple ingredients and sauce delicious. Nothing overpowered anything else. It all worked perfectly. The sauce was delicious and was well proportioned.
Overall, a job well done!
Original Poutine
Made with:
Regular cut fries
House-made gravy
Vegan mozzarella
I’d say this is the one thing that could use improvement, but I still give it an A for the taste!
I personally really liked the gravy. It felt like regular fast-food gravy! Sometimes you are in the mood for more gourmet ‘groovy gravy,’ and sometimes you are in the mood for some delicious fast food gravy. They executed the fast food gravy vibe wonderfully.
The only slight disappointment was the cheese. I expected it to look more like faux cheese curds, but it was merely vegan cheese shreds. As everything else on the menu so perfectly imitates the original flavor and texture of its omnivore counterpart, I was expecting the poutine to be more representative of its vegetarian equivalent.
I don’t know if they run out of their more curd style cheese or if this is what they always use, but I’d say if they were to amp up their vegan cheese curd game on the poutine, it would be a 10/10.
That said, I was actually quite impressed with just how much cheese they loaded on the fries! They did not skimp on the cheese shreds, let me tell ya!
So all in all, it still tasted great. It just wasn’t as incredible as the burgers that are such incredibly authentic plant-based substitutes.
Chick’n Wings
Sauce choices include: Buffalo, BBQ, Sweet & Spicy Thai, and Teriyaki
“Seasoned with a signature blend of spices, deep-fried to a crispy golden brown, and dipped into your choice of sauce!” It was loaded with sauce, which I deeply appreciated.
We had the BBQ Chick’n Wings. Super tasty and incredible texture! I think the texture of the wings was so mind-blowing it kept distracting me from the flavor!
I’m not a big fan of fake chick’n wings in general. Like I don’t see myself ever craving them… but they are fun, and they taste delicious.
I think it’s just fun to try something like this once in a while. It’s definitely a fun thing to show people that have never been introduced to vegan faux meat before! These wings will surprise some people.
Ordering them to see your meat-eating dad’s face and have his whole world shaken, will be totally worth it.
Speaking of shaking...
Strawberry Milkshake!
Made with a creamy non-GMO soy-based ice cream! I chose the strawberry flavor out of their many available options.
This milkshake was creamy, sweet, light, frothy, and had just the right amount of natural sweetness! This is a light and frothy plant-based milkshake that won’t leave you feeling disgusting or too full to enjoy your plant-based feast.
The strawberry flavor is not too sweet, which to me, is very important! There are delicious strawberry chunks that you slurp up every so often. I would order it again!
What would I order again from the vancouver based veg out food truck?
I would get:
The Veg Out Classic Burger (again)
The Original Chick’n Burger (again)
A side of fries
A side of gravy
Strawberry Milkshake (again)
ALL FOR MYSELF. I’M SERIOUS.
